ICD-10-CM

Program Hours

The program’s suggested course hours are 6 to 10 Clock Hours of student work, all of which is to be completed online.

Online Delivery Format

This Online short program walks students through the key elements of the ICD-10-CM coding system, including its purpose, various types of codes and codes relevant to different types of diseases and conditions, official instructional notations, and the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.

Students will learn the material by working through each individual lesson, which opens with a set of learning objectives, presents several slides of instruction and then closes either with a short summary of the lesson. Interactive activity designed to evaluate students’ learning are integrated throughout the lessons.

Finally, the online course includes two Practice Tests and a Final Exam designed to assess students’ overarching grasp of the material covered throughout the course. If the student receives a 70% or better on the Final Exam they receive a certificate of completion along with 5 CEUs for AAPC and AHIMA.

Program Description

This short program is designed to help professional medical coders achieve five Units (CEUs) that are recognized by the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) as well as the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The short program can help students prepare for the ICD-10 Proficiency Assessment exam which will be required of all certified AAPC members beginning October 1st, 2013. Certified coders will have two years to take and pass the assessment.

In this short program, students will learn how to tackle the transition from the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) and the Tenth Revision, ICD-10. In particular, students will become aware of the potential obstacles posed by the transition to ICD-10 coding in regards to coding a more extensive range of medical conditions and procedures. Implementation of the ICD-10 system will increase the number of medical codes over eight-fold, from about 17,000 codes in the ICD-9 system to about 140,000 codes in the ICD-10 system. Students who complete this short course will be trained on how to navigate this major shift in how medical coding and billing will work. Obtaining this knowledge will enable current medical coders to assist their respective medical facilities in a smooth transition to ICD-10.

The ICD-10-CM codes will be designed for use in all U.S. healthcare treatment settings, so this short program will appeal to many professional coders looking to master the ICD-10-CM codes in advance of the codes’ implementation.

Program Hours

The suggested course hours for Elsevier’s ICD-10-PCS Career Advancement Program total 6 to 10 Hours of student work, all of which is completed online.

Online Delivery Format

The ICD-10-PCS Career Advancement Program is designed to be taken entirely online. It walks students through an overview of the ICD-10-PCS system, as well as strategies for looking up codes for a range of in-patient medical procedures and treatments.

Each online lesson presents several slides of instruction and then ends with an interactive assessment in which students can check their knowledge.

In addition, each set of lessons associated with a particular chapter in the ICD-10-PCS manual includes both a trial and a final test designed to evaluate students’ grasp of the theoretical and practical information covered in that particular, chapter-specific set of lessons.

Finally, the program includes two practice tests and a final exam designed to assess students’ overarching grasp of the material covered throughout the course.
